A RIOT FOR RADIO
College Collision: Play It FOURward
March 12, 2011 / Tiendesitas Activity Center
Words by: Joey Dizon
Leave it to the young generation to fight for the future, as competing bands from various colleges decided to slug it out last March in front of the discerning public, as they dished out originals, covers and even themed ditties singing about promoting Radio Listenership while battling out for the top honor of being named the year’s champions as far as college bands were concerned.
Hosted by Dig Radio’s Cyrus Fernandez and Evee Simon, the fury of the competition was felt early on in the afternoon as the respective competing bands’ cheering squads showed full support of their friends, which included bands like WRONGMOVERUBY, THOU – G, SHEEPSARAHSLEEP, BEHIND CAMERAS and THE SNICKETS. Though most of the band’s were pretty tame and locked-in on a more radio-friendly sound, it was WILDERNESS that broke the house down with an inventive, modern rock style not unlike The Mars Volta’s, but it was GENERIQUE who ultimately took home first place plus the Radiogenic Award, whose theme was “radio is not a dying medium.”
Present to judge the event was Dig Radio’s Francis Reyes, GREYHOUNDZ drummer TJ Brilliantes and PULP’s Joey Dizon, who not only scored the bands accordingly but provided tips ala American Idol. Towards the end of the night, YOUR IMAGINARY FRIENDS and the previous year’s winners DANCE PLAY CREATE offered their music as entertainment.
College Collision 4: Play It FOURward was also sponsored by August Studio, Lilystars Records, the DZUP Radio Circle, Love One Another Studios and PULP Magazine.
